About Cape Coast Castle Cape Coast Castle is one of the largest and most well-preserved slave trade forts in Ghana, serving as a powerful reminder of Africa’s colonial past. Originally a Portuguese trade lodge built in 1555, it was later fortified by the Swedish Africa Company in 1653.
Over time, the British took control and used it as a major hub for the transatlantic slave trade. Today, the castle functions as a museum managed by the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, featuring historical exhibits, guided tours, and a gift shop selling Ghanaian arts and crafts.
